.75 inch Steel Strapping

3/4“ Steel banding has been a staple in warehouses for a very long time.  3/4” x .023” is the most common for medium duty applications.  Steel strapping is very strong, and it does not stretch much (it has low elongation).  3/4” steel strapping comes in both regular duty, and high tensile.  Regular duty (RD/Apex) is used in most applications, and high tensile (HT/Magnus) is used where there is an impact potential.  HT will elongate more, which lets it take a bigger impact/hit before breaking.  The higher the strap’s elongation, the more impact energy it takes to break the band.

Regular duty 3/4“ steel strapping has 2 main thicknesses: .020", and .023”.  Coils are wound on standard strapping coil with a 16" x 3" core size.  These .75” coils will fit on almost all dispensers.  Our favorite 3/4” steel strapping cart is the 3100 (click to link).

High tensile 3/4” steel strapping thicknesses: .023”, .025”, .029”, and .031”.   Our favorite 3/4” steel strapping cart is the 3100 (click to link) for standard oscillated wound, or the 3340 (click to link) for ribbon wound.

The 3/4“ steel strapping is painted black, and then waxed.  The wax allows the band to slip on feedwheel style tools (like the 1425), and is standard in the US per ASTM D 3953.  All of our 3/4“ strapping meet or exceed these specifications.

Strapping safety factor:

The general formula to figure out the number of bands required, and strength is to take your pallet weight, multiply by safety factor, and divide by the number of bands.  For example, if you have a 2,000 pound pallet, and need a 2X safety factory, with 2 bands on your skid (2,000 pounds x 2 safety factor / 2 bands= 2,000 pound break strength strap), you would use the 3/4“ x .023" steel strapping that has a minimum break strength of 1,980 pounds.

Safety factor for using steel strapping on pallets, bunks, or bundles*:

  • For internal packaging (moving WHIP product in your own factory) 1 X
  • For over the road with a square bunk 1.5-2X
  • Shipping by rail/container 2-3X
  • Round applications 2-3X
  • Round and stacked applications 3-5X, but depending on bundle height this can be higher.

*You need to make sure your load is safe before you send it out.  If you need help, contact Allstrap to get the appropriate steel strapping safety ratios.

3/4” x .020” has break strength of 1,765 pounds and 19.6 feet per pound, or about 2,000’ per coil.

Type: Steel strapping is edged, painted black, and waxed.

Coil weight 102 lb. +/- 10%,12 coils per skid, core 16"x 3" mill (oscillated) wound.

3/4" x .020" Punched Steel Strapping (anchor or X brace strapping)

Type: Steel strapping standard put-up, plus punched.

Coil weight 100 lb. +/- 10%,12 coils per skid, core 16"x 3" mill (oscillated) wound. Center pushed is standard, but ask us for staggered punched or for alternating punch size (for a nail or screw).  We run custom punch jobs all the time and can give you exactly what you need!

Allstrap Opinion:  Generally we prefer PET strapping over steel strapping for light duty applications, so check out the P329 or BXT3-19 tools to see if they can work for you.  For heavier applications check out the 1.25” x .050” PET strap (with a great video of a pipe bunk, and railroad tie bunk getting beat up).  If you do not use very much banding, and already have tools, it is fine to stay with 3/4” steel strapping.  All round applications must stay with 3/4” steel strapping.
